Committee Corner: Shingle Recycling

The Shingle Recycling Committee seeks to find opportunities for CDRA members to grow their businesses and expand end-markets. And the meeting on October 14th was a great example of this. Chair Dan Horton thanked Lars Bergan, Regional Sales Manager for Rotochopper, for agreeing to provide a company update. Lars has worked with hundreds of companies to establish economically and ecologically successful businesses for recycled wood, asphalt shingles, food waste, ag bi-products and a wide variety of other organic waste streams. During the presentation, Lars reviewed the development of Rotochopper over the years and the capabilities of their diesel RG1 and B66 shingle recycling equipment.

The grinding and screening capabilities of the B66 were specifically mentioned. During the question and answer period, the impact of different shingle qualities on grinding efficiency was discussed, as well as the use of head rollers for magnetic separation. Lars explained the benefits of using both cross-belt magnets and head rollers, and he also compared the differences between diesel and electric units in terms of power and throughput while emphasizing the benefits of matching units to specific applications for which they are well suited.

Dan continued with news that funding for the CDRA Best Practices Guide version 2.0 has been approved by the Board. And ARMA personnel invited committee members to attend the third virtual Asphalt Shingle Roof Recycling Forum, coming up on November 18th. And finally, Dan and Executive Director Andrea Johnson encouraged all committee members to attend CDRA’s  Annual Conference and Tradeshow, coming up this January in Tampa, Florida. Members can secure discounted registration by visiting https://www.cdraconference.com/. During our next committee meeting on December 9th, the group will discuss the progress being made in planning the next Shingle Recycling Forum to be held in Raleigh, NC in late 2026, and the development of our RAS lifecycle analysis project, in partnership with the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) and the National Asphalt Paving Association.
